Could You Be a Councillor?

Make a Difference Where You Live

Every day, local councils make decisions that affect our lives – from roads, parking and planning to parks, community facilities, housing, environmental services and support for vulnerable residents. These decisions shape the places where we live, work and raise our families. That's why it is so important that local councils are made up of people who genuinely understand the communities they serve.

Bournemouth West Conservatives are looking for local people who care about their neighbourhoods and want to make a positive difference by considering standing as a Conservative candidate in the 2027 local elections. You do not need to be a politician. In fact, some of the best councillors are ordinary people with extraordinary commitment to their communities.

Politics Needs More Real People

Councillors come from all walks of life. They are business owners, teachers, healthcare professionals, engineers, tradespeople, charity volunteers, veterans, parents, carers, students and retirees. Some work full-time, some run businesses and others volunteer extensively within their communities.

What they have in common is a desire to serve others and improve the places they call home. The skills you use every day listening, problem solving, managing budgets, leading teams, supporting people, organising projects or simply understanding the challenges facing local families, can all make you an effective councillor.

We need people with different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives to ensure local government reflects the communities it represents.

What Does a Councillor Do?

At its heart, being a councillor is about representing local people.

Councillors:

  • Listen to residents and help address local concerns.
  • Represent their communities and give residents a voice.
  • Make decisions about council services and spending.
  • Scrutinise policies and hold decision-makers to account.
  • Support community groups, charities and local initiatives.
  • Work with businesses, public services and voluntary organisations.
  • Champion improvements that make their area a better place to live.

No two days are ever the same. One day you might be helping a resident with a local issue, attending a community event or meeting with local organisations. Another day you could be debating council policy, scrutinising spending decisions or helping shape future plans for the area.

Making a Difference Starts Locally

Many of the issues people care most about are local:

  • Cleaner and safer streets.
  • Better roads and transport.
  • Protecting green spaces.
  • Supporting local businesses.
  • Planning and development.
  • Community safety.
  • Opportunities for young people.
  • Supporting vulnerable residents.

Councillors have the opportunity to influence these decisions and ensure the voices of local residents are heard.

You Don't Need Previous Political Experience

Many people assume they need years of political experience before standing for election. They don't. What matters most is integrity, commitment, common sense and a willingness to listen and learn.

The Conservative Party provides training, guidance and support throughout the candidate journey. You will meet experienced councillors and volunteers who can help you understand the role and develop the skills needed to succeed.

Why Become a Conservative Councillor?

Conservative councillors believe decisions are best made close to the people they affect. They believe in strong communities, responsible use of public money, supporting local enterprise, protecting local character and ensuring residents have a genuine voice in local decision-making.

Being a Conservative councillor gives you the opportunity to put those values into practice and deliver real results for your community.

Could This Be You?

If you've ever thought:

"There must be a better way."

"Someone should stand up for local residents."

"I want to help improve my community."

then perhaps that someone could be you. Local government needs people who are prepared to step forward, bring fresh ideas and make a positive contribution.

The 2027 local elections will help shape the future of our communities for years to come. We are looking for people who care, people who listen and people who are willing to make a difference. You may be exactly the person your community needs.

Interested in Finding Out More?

Taking the first step doesn't mean making a commitment. If you would simply like an informal conversation about what being a councillor involves, the time commitment, the selection process or whether the role might be right for you, we'd be delighted to hear from you.

No pressure. No obligation. Just a conversation. Together, we can build stronger communities and ensure local residents continue to have a strong voice in the decisions that affect their lives.
