Congratulations to our newly elected Bournemouth Town Councillors for Bournemouth Central, Westbourne & West Cliff, Karen Hay and Michael Labidi.
As Bournemouth’s new Town Council begins its work, many residents are understandably asking what Town Councillors do and how their role differs from BCP Councillors, so we thought it would be helpful to explain. At present, Bournemouth Town Council has limited formal responsibilities, with allotments currently one of its main direct areas of responsibility. Over time, further local responsibilities may develop.
Town Councillors focus on representing community views and supporting very local neighbourhood matters, including:
• Allotments and community spaces
• Local events and activities
• Community initiatives and projects
• Working with residents and local groups
• Championing local concerns and priorities
• Helping strengthen community engagement
BCP Councillors remain responsible for the major council services across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, including:
• Roads and highways
• Waste and recycling
• Planning and housing
• Social care and safeguarding
• Schools and education
• Council tax and major budgets
• Beaches, tourism and economic development
While the two councils are separate, they will work together where responsibilities overlap to support local communities. Importantly, your elected BCP ward councillors continue in their existing roles and remain responsible for representing residents on wider council matters.
We wish Karen and Michael every success as they begin serving residents in these new positions. Thank you to every resident who supported our candidates by voting for them and all those who helped deliver the election literature. Your support is truly appreciated.
